Dacuda at Qualcomm Booth – 3D Scanning – SIGGRAPH 2016

August 3, 2016 —

What is SIGGRAPH and what did Dacuda do there?

The 43rd SIGGRAPH Conference is a five-day forum where the world’s most prestigious high tech industry leaders showcase their products and facilitate educational conversations. This year the conference was centered around Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques and it took place from July 24-28 in Anaheim, CA. Dacuda partnered with Qualcomm and presented a demo on 3D scanning using nothing but a smartphone. Dacuda’s co-founder and VP engineer, Martin Zahnert, was invited to speak about the accessibility of this new technology on the panel “A Vision for Computer Vision: Emerging Technologies.”

What is Dacuda’s 3D scanning technology and how does it differ from others?

It is a purely camera based 3D scanning solution that doesn’t require any additional hardware. It can run on a standard nexus 6P phone and can scan pretty much anything you can think of: your favourite meal, a sculpture, your baby puppy (if you can catch it), and even your goofy best friend. You can even easily take a selfie and create a 3D model of yourself. At the joint Dacuda and Qualcomm booth, we showcased 3D Scanning on two pieces of fruit using just a regular smartphone and wowed the reporter from Forbes Tech. He writes, “Dacuda and Qualcomm teamed up to… demonstrate how effortless 3D scanning on mobile has become.”

What is the takeaway from the conference?

Dacuda & Qualcomm’s showcase introduced the simplicity of 3D scanning to the public—no hardware or setup is necessary. It is affordable so this high-end technology is available to more people. Finally, it is just simply fun to play around with so anyone with a smartphone can create his or her own 3D content.

Why Mobile VR Experiences are About to Get Much Better

May 24, 2016 —

What will make it better?
After enabling smartphone user to generate 3D avatars of themselves in real-time to either print, play in games or share into VR spaces we are excited to announce the release of our latest SLAM Scan® 3D based solution: A fully immersive VR experience for mobile phone users with 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF).

Why is this needed?
Today’s mobile VR solutions offer the limited 3 degrees of freedom (3DoF) which only allows users to look around, since only rotational movements of their head are sensed and transferred to the display. Translational movements like e.g. looking around a corner or moving closer to an object are not supported in today’s mobile VR solutions.
What is the advantage for the users?
With our fully immersive VR solution we are finally bringing the 6DoF to smartphone-based VR. Using a regular smartphone with our proprietary tracking algorithm, we have made it possible for anyone to freely walk and move through VR spaces and experience VR the way it is meant to be experienced – simply using a mobile phone. Our type of mobile room-scale VR experience is enabled by tracking all 6DoF and applying the most advanced computer vision algorithms to the built in standard camera.
Why is this different?
6DoF tracking was previously only available in high-end setups such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive which use external components that are cumbersome to set up and expensive. We achieve this same type of 6DoF experience with our latest version of the SLAM Scan® 3D engine.
What is the set-up?
In our solution, we use an iPhone 6 in a Zeiss VR One headset and the SteamVR game ‘theBlu’ to demo just how well this works and it looks absolutely fantastic.
How can you benefit?
Take a look at the video below and see for yourself! Wouldn’t you like to experience virtual reality at a price point that doesn’t break the bank? We at Dacuda believe everyone should get a chance to play in these new virtual worlds.

If you want to experience our fully immersive VR experience for mobile yourself, please stay tuned for the E3 Expo in LA, where we will be showing off our solution live!

Team Celebrates App Launch

November 27, 2015 —

How many Dacuda staff does it take to celebrate a new app launch? The whole team!

We flew to chilly but cool Berlin this week to celebrate the launch of our app developed with out partners, Staramba 3D. Appropriately inside the FC Bayern Munchen fan shop, the launch party attracted both media and football fans. Even more exciting, we had a chance to show a demo of our 3D face-scanning app with legendary football stars Fredi Bobic, Marko Rehmer and Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić.

With the free app, the dream of all football fans can come true: to be side by side with their favorite stars. Currently, Staramba has the 3D profiles of players from Bayern Munich, Arsenal London, and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. More UEFA Champions League Teams will follow.
